Secretary General meets UK Foreign Secretary, Georgian President at UN

On the second day of his visit to the United Nations in New York, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen met first with UK Foreign Secretary David Milliband. They focused principally on Afghanistan, including the importance of stepping up the training and equipment of Afghan security forces, and the steps necessary to accelerate a transition to Afghan lead in security and other civilian sectors.

NATO Secretary General visits the United Nations

The Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, began his visit to the United Nations with a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The two Secretaries General focused primarily on Afghanistan, looking forward to an upcoming UN-sponsored conference which should help chart the way forward for international support for Afghanistan, as part of an overall transition to Afghan lead in all sectors.

NATO Military Committee meets in Portugal

NATO's Military Committee concluded a two-day conference in Lisbon, Portugal, on 20 September. The conference focused mainly on the operation in Afghanistan and the New Strategic Concept.

UN representative addresses North Atlantic Council on counter-narcotics efforts in Afghanistan

The Executive Director of the United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Antonio Maria Costa, visited NATO HQ on 18 September. He addressed the subject of opium production in Afghanistan with the North Atlantic Council, NATO’s principal decision making body, and the Afghan Ambassador Zia Uddin Nezam.

Connecting universities in Ukraine

17 September saw the completion of a NATO Networking Infrastructure Grant in Ternopil, Ukraine, which helped set up and improve the Internet connectivity of four major research and educational institutes in the region. The Science for Peace and Security Programme funded this grant with a budget of 129 000 euros.
