NATO and Ukraine strengthen their cooperation

NATO and Ukraine took their relationship to a higher level by the signing of a “Declaration to Complement the Charter on a Distinctive Partnership between NATO and Ukraine” at NATO Headquarters on 21 August. The document was signed by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and by Ukrainian Ambassador to NATO Ihor Sagach on behalf of the Ukrainian President.

NATO photography contest website now open for submissions

South Eastern Europe is at the centre of a photo contest launched by NATO’s Public Diplomacy division this summer. This free competition is open to young people, aged 18 to 25, living in the region.

Il Malteser International manda tre squadre a Swat, nel nord-ovest del Paese

Tre squadre di medici del Malteser International stanno fornendo assistenza sanitaria ai rifugiati interni che in questo periodo stanno tornando nei loro villaggi nella regione di Swat, nel Pakistan nord-occidentale. Lo stress psicologico ed il caldo torrido, insieme a infezioni intestinali, peggiorano la loro situazione. “Non c’è attualmente adeguata assistenza medica per loro” spiega il dottor Jürgen Clemens, coordinatore per il Pakistan del Malteser International. “Le autorità locali, aggiunge, fanno presente che molti centri medici sono danneggiati o completamente distrutti e hanno urgente bisogno di personale medico qualificato”.

Afghan elections

The NATO Secretary General is planning to make a televised statement on the Afghan elections at 14h30 GMT (16h30 Brussels time, 19h00 Kabul time).

Today the world has been watching Afghanistan. We have witnessed the first Afghan-led elections in thirty years; a testimony to the determination of the Afghan people to build democracy. I want to congratulate the people of Afghanistan for the courage they have shown in spite of challenging circumstances.

Secretary General visits Iceland

The NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, paid a visit to Iceland on 20 August 2009. This was his first introductory visit to a NATO capital since his appointment as Secretary General in early August.

On behalf of NATO, I condemn in the strongest possible terms the terrorist attacks in Baghdad today. I would like to express NATO’s sincere condolences to the Iraqi government, the Iraqi people and to the families and loved ones of the victims of these bloody attacks. This tragic loss of life and suffering underscore, yet again, the grave danger the terrorist threat poses to all of us.

NATO Secretary General to visit Iceland on 20 August 2009

The NATO Secretary General, Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, will visit Reykjavik on Thursday, 20 August 2009. He will meet with Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir and with Minister of Foreign Affairs Össur Skarphédinsson. The Secretary General will also meet with members of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament (Althingi).

NATO counter-piracy mission continues with enhanced mandate

NATO’s contribution to international efforts to combat piracy off the Horn of Africa and in the Gulf of Aden entered a new phase on 17 August after the North Atlantic Council (NAC) approved Operation Ocean Shield.
