IL CANTO GREGORIANO, MUSICA VOCALE, MONODICO E LITURGICO
Il canto gregoriano è un genere musicale vocale, monodico e liturgico, proprio del rito romano della Chiesa cattolica. Venne elaborato in Occidente a partire dall’VIII secolo dall’incontro del canto romano antico con il canto gallicano nel contesto della rinascita carolingia. È cantato ancora oggi, non solo in ambito liturgico, e viene riconosciuto dalla Chiesa cattolica come “canto proprio della liturgia romana. Il canto gregoriano è un canto liturgico, solitamente interpretato da un coro o da un solista chiamato cantore (cantor) o spesso dallo stesso celebrante con la partecipazione di tutta l’assemblea liturgica. È finalizzato a sostenere il testo liturgico in latino.
