Ethiopia – Call for release of two journalists, investigation into conditions of detention
Reporters Without Borders wrote today to Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi calling for the release of two journalists who were arrested in June, Reyot Alemu and Wubeshet Taye, and for an investigation into the conditions in which they have been held. Reyot, a young woman columnist, is in very poor health, while Wubeshet, the deputy editor of a weekly, says he has been mistreated. “The situation of both of these journalists is alarming,” the letter to the prime minister says. “We were (…)

Sudan – Journalist freed on bail but daily prevented from publishing for three days and return of prior censorship mooted
Reporters Without Borders welcomes the news that Abuzar Ali Al-Amin, the deputy editor of the now closed daily Rai Al-Shaab, was finally released on bail on 22 August, but deplores the failure to dismiss the new charges that were brought against him in June. Amin is still facing a possible death sentence on charges in connection with articles he wrote and with a security official’s claim that he was attacked by Amin at the time of his arrest in May 2010, when Amin was tortured. The news of (…)

Israel – Palestinian journalists under fire again from Israeli troops
Reporters Without Borders condemns the complete failure to punish abusive treatment of Palestinian journalists by the Israel Defence Forces in the West Bank. Many arbitrary arrests have been reported in the past two months and five journalists are currently held. Cases of Israeli soldiers deliberately firing on media personnel have also been reported. We urge the Israeli authorities to investigate these serious violations of physical integrity and to free all the detained journalists. The (…)

Kazakhstan – Imprisoned journalist’s parole request again rejected
Imprisoned journalist Ramazan Esergepov’s request for release on parole was rejected yesterday for the fourth time by an appeal commission in Taraz prison, in southern Kazakhstan, although, under Kazakh law, a prisoner can be freed conditionally after serving a third of their sentence. “The prison administration has again defied law and logic in order to keep Esergepov in detention,” Reporters Without Borders said. “His rights have repeatedly been flouted since his arrest in January 2009. This (…)

Syria – Arrests and beatings as information war continues
Reporters Without Borders continues to register cases of violence and arbitrary arrests in which the victims are anyone trying to provide information about what is happening in Syria. It also condemns the journalist Eyad Shorbaji’s trial, which is due to begin today in Damascus. The reason for his arrest and the charges are still unknown. “We fear that Bashar Al-Assad’s regime is locked into a repressive frenzy that has reached a point of no return,” Reporters Without Borders said. “Isolated (…)

Macedonia – Disastrous summer for Macedonian media, with TV station and three dailies closed
Reporters Without Borders is very worried about a steady decline in respect for press freedom in Macedonia since the start of the year. The closure of three national dailies, the withdrawal of the leading privately-owned TV station’s licence and changes to the Broadcasting Council that facilitate government control have caused an upheaval in the media world that does not bode well for freedom of expression. Closure of three leading dailies and A1 TV Reporters Without Borders deplores the 3 (…)
