Reporters Without Borders welcomes President Omar Al-Bashir’s announcement during a meeting with journalists on 27 August that he intends to free all the journalists imprisoned in Sudan, but we call for this decision to be extended to all media workers and for it to be carried out without delay. Reporters Without Borders welcomes the news that Abuzar Ali Al-Amin, the deputy editor of the now closed daily Rai Al-Shaab, was finally released on bail on 22 August, but deplores the failure to dismiss the new charges that were brought against him in June. Amin is still facing a possible death sentence on charges in connection with articles he wrote and with a security official’s claim that he was attacked by Amin at the time of his arrest in May 2010, when Amin was tortured. Reporters Without Borders is relieved to learn that Al-Jarida reporter Amal Habani was released from Omdurman women’s prison yesterday after her colleagues paid the fine of 2,000 Sudanese pounds that a court imposed on her on 25 July. Another Al-Midan employee, Mohamed Rahma, was released today after 14 days in detention. Four are still being held.
