Reporters Without Borders firmly condemns the targeted attacks by police on journalists that have occurred during a continuing wave of angry demonstrations to demand better protection for women and tougher punishments for sex crimes following the gang-rape of a female student in New Delhi on 16 December. India – National media prevented from covering anti-nuclear protest in Tamil Nadu
Reporters Without Borders condemns police obstruction of national print and broadcast media today in Idinthakarai, a fishing village in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, where the authorities are trying to remove entrenched anti-nuclear protesters from their camp beside the Koodankulam nuclear power station. “It is always disturbing to see the authorities establish a perimeter and deny access to the media, even temporarily, for reasons other than their security,” Reporters Without Borders (…)
India – Two journalists murdered in space of two weeks in Madhya Pradesh
Reporters Without Borders deplores the death of newspaper reporter Rajesh Mishra, who was attacked and beaten over the head on 1 March in Rewa, in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, and died of his injuries the next day. India – Government launches new broad offensive on electronic communications
Reporters Without Borders is alarmed by the latest demands being made by India’s security agencies with the aim of reinforcing surveillance of Internet use. Email service providers such as Yahoo! and Gmail are now being instructed to route all emails accessed in India through servers based there to facilitate monitoring.
