Reporters Without Borders expressed deep shock today at the murder of Indian freedom of information activist and blogger Shehla Masood and called for an impartial and independent investigation, the arrest of the killer, respect for the right to information and protection of its supporters. India – Mumbai high court allows local police to continue investigation into reporter’s murder
The Mumbai high court today gave the local police two more weeks, until 6 July, to produce a report on their investigation into the murder of Jyotirmoy Dey, a crime reporter for the daily Mid Day who was gunned down on the outskirts of Mumbai on 11 June. Reporters Without Borders is concerned that the Mumbai police are conducting the investigation. “We think the government should have assigned this investigation to a federal unit right from outset,” the press freedom organization said. India – Operators ordered to suspend BlackBerry services that cannot be monitored
Reporters Without Borders urges the Indian government to rescind an order it issued to national telecom operators on 13 February to suspend all mobile messaging services that cannot be monitored by the country’s law enforcement agencies, including the BlackBerry smartphone’s corporate email service, called BlackBerry Enterprise Server. India – Newspaper reporter gunned down in Chhattisgarh
Reporters Without Borders is saddened to learn that Umesh Rajput, 32, a journalist employed by the newspaper Nai Duniya, was gunned down by two masked gunmen on a motor-cycle as he left his home in Raipur, in the central state of Chhattisgarh, on the evening of 23 January. He was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on arrival. A message written in red letters was found at the murder scene.
