Burundi – Unrelenting court gives journalist three-year jail term on appeal

Reporters Without Borders is deeply disappointed to learn that an appeal court in the central city of Gitega today imposed a three-year jail sentence on the journalist Hassan Ruvakuki instead of overturning his conviction. In the event, today’s hearing was postponed until 1 August because of a lawyers’ strike. Two other RPA journalists at its regional (…)

Burundi – Call for the release of Jean-Claude Kavumbagu after nearly six months in custody

Reporters Without Borders today called on the authorities in Burundi to release journalist Jean-Claude Kavumbagu, who has been held in custody for nearly six months at Mpimba prison in the capital Bujumbura. No trial has yet been opened in the case. “Jean-Claude Kavumbagu should be released immediately. He was arrested last July and is about to begin the year 2011 behind bars without ever being put on trial. Pre-trial detention should remain an exceptional measure”, the worldwide press (…)
