Kazakhstan – Kazkhstan
Read in Russian / читать по-русски Казахстан 2012 Kazakhstan, which considers itself a regional model after holding the rotating presidency of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in 2010, seems to be straying from its fine promises to embark without detours on the road to cybercensorship. In 2011, a unprecedented social protest movement prolonged by a violent uprising, a wave of odd attacks and the Head of State’s health problems made the authorities even more nervous, causing (…)

Reporters Without Borders objects to the decision to bring two journalists and two activist bloggers before military courts to face charges of harming the army’s image and seeking to overthrow the state. “The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces has demonstrated once again its willingness to muzzle media workers, who are the repeated victims of military oppression,” the press freedom organization said. “This organization openly condemns the use of military courts to try journalists and (…)

Reporters Without Borders strongly condemns the sudden escalation in cyber-censorship by the Tajik government. Reporters Without Borders firmly condemns the way the police treated journalists during post-election protests in Moscow and Saint Petersburg on 5 March, when eight journalists were arrested and two were beaten (one by police and one by a group of nationalists). “It is clear that the purpose of this treatment was to silence journalists and prevent them from filming the protests,” Reporters Without Borders said. “The media were clearly targeted. This must stop. Journalists who are being held (…)
