Venezuela – Venezuelan authorities impose 2-million-dollar fine on private TV station
The chairman of the National Telecommunications Commission, Pedro Maldonado, yesterday imposed a fine of 9.3 millions bolivars (2.162 millions dollars) on the private television channel Globovision over its coverage of riots at El Rodeo prison, near Caracas, in June. “This astronomical penalty is merely a pretext to force Globovision, a private broadcaster which has already been the target of several suspensions and threats of closure in the past, to close its doors and halt its operations (…)
Malawi – Journalists must be allowed to investigate the death of activist Robert Chasowa

Brazil – Favela reporters censored by army, wave of attacks on regional journalists
The army’s attempts to “pacify” and secure Brazil’s favelas and crack down on their drug traffickers before the 2014 Football World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games are raising concern about the accompanying violations of human rights and civil liberties in these communities, including the rights of their own journalists. News reporting by the residents of these poor neighbourhoods should enjoy the same safety guarantees and freedom from censorship as reporting by Brazil’s mainstream media. A (…)

Egypt – Jailed blogger’s retrial adjourned again as military plays for time
Reporters Without Borders deplores the latest adjournment yesterday of jailed blogger Maikel Nabil Sanad’s retrial by court martial on a charge of insulting the armed forces in his blog. After Sanad’s original conviction was overturned on appeal, the retrial was initially scheduled to have begun on 13 October. “We condemn this persistence in persecuting Sanad and call for his immediate release,” Reporters Without Borders said. “This military court should dismiss the charges against him. The (…)

Reporters Without Borders shares the concern that the Chilean Union of Photographers and Cameramen has expressed about the possibility of more violence against media personnel by the security forces, especially the carabinero militarized police, during the large protests that are expected to take place today and tomorrow in response to calls from the student movement. The concern is justified by the many cases of abuses by police and carabineros at previous demonstrations. Chile’s (…)

The four-month suspension of CNS Channel Six, a privately-owned opposition TV station, at President Bharrat Jagdeo’s behest will begin on 1 December instead of the original date of 3 October. The president himself announced this on 9 October at the same time as he announced that the general and regional elections will take place on 28 November. “So CNS Channel Six’s suspension will begin after the elections, which will allow it to cover the election campaign normally,” Reporters Without (…)
