Egypt – Armed forces drop defamation charges against woman blogger
Reporters Without Borders hails yesterday’s decision by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces not to press defamation charges against the blogger Asmaa Mahfouz for comments about the military that she posted on online social networks. Middle East & North Africa – Editor released after 16 months in prison for criticizing prime minister
Reporters Without Borders is relieved to learn that Saad Al-Awsi, the editor of the Baghdad-based weekly Al-Shahid, was released yesterday after 16 months in detention. He is to receive medical treatment abroad before he resumes editing the newspaper. Al-Awsi was arrested by members of the security forces during a search of his home on 14 April 2010. Kazakhstan – Imprisoned journalist’s parole request again rejected
Imprisoned journalist Ramazan Esergepov’s request for release on parole was rejected yesterday for the fourth time by an appeal commission in Taraz prison, in southern Kazakhstan, although, under Kazakh law, a prisoner can be freed conditionally after serving a third of their sentence. “The prison administration has again defied law and logic in order to keep Esergepov in detention,” Reporters Without Borders said. “His rights have repeatedly been flouted since his arrest in January 2009. India – Right to Information campaigner Shehla Masood shot dead
Reporters Without Borders expressed deep shock today at the murder of Indian freedom of information activist and blogger Shehla Masood and called for an impartial and independent investigation, the arrest of the killer, respect for the right to information and protection of its supporters. Kyrgyzstan – Murdered Uzbek journalist’s brother beaten unconscious in Osh
Reporters Without Borders has learned that Uzbek journalist Shokhrukh Sayipov was attacked and beaten unconscious by unidentified assailants when he arrived in the southern Kyrgyz city of Osh on 10 August to attend a seminar. He was hospitalized with multiple injuries and partial memory loss. None of Sayipov’s personal belongings were taken, which suggests the motive for the attack was linked to his work as a journalist.
